Why it got dark at the Crucifixion

crosstwilightNow from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. Matt. 27:45 c.f. Mark 15:33; Luke23:44

FYI: Six to nine would be from noon till 3:00 pm on our Babylonian time scale.

None of us are meteorologists or astronomers, so we don’t know HOW it got dark, we only know why it must be.

Even the inherited churches understand that the Passover lambs were symbolic of the Redeemer’s final and complete payment for sin.

For Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed. 1 Cor 5:7b

Lost to the inherited churches is understanding anything about Passover and those lambs. They so avoid all things “Jewish” that they can’t seem to read the whole Bible.

The lambs must be eaten at night. Nothing is to be left till next light.

They shall eat the flesh that night, Ex 12:8a

Our Messiah had to be partaken of in the darkness of our sin, so He can bring us into the light of freedom. Egypt’s paganism was darkness, as all sin is darkness, a darkness we must be brought out of.

. . . the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” Matt. 4:16

However this darkness was obviously not the darkness of night. It was the darkness that was before creation. When there were no celestial orbs, and no earth for them to shine on.

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Rev. 13:8 KJV

There is something about the Crucifixion that is outside of our understanding of time. How else could the sacrifice apply to those who came before it happened? Because it happened before anything else. God is not limited by time and space. So even thought there was a time in first century Judea, and a place called Golgotha, it is a timeless and spaceless happening.

For our God is not constrained by our limited understanding He is omnipresents, this is why Messiah could say.

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”  John 8:58

David explained it this way.

We are so embedded in time and space that we forget that time is merely a way of measuring the speed of the celestial orbs in relation to one another and the sequence of events in our lives. It is not a real thing in and of itself.

Messiah was crucified in the dark before creation. That is how omnipresent our God is.
