Are there Ten Commandments or are they just Suggestions?

You are Under the Law

mosesWe have no idea what this phrase is meant to imply. It is usually followed by quoting that, “The Law has passed away.” As if such a verse existed, and quoter is absolutely sure that it does. We always show them the closest such verse.

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.  Rom 3:31 KJV

Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law. Rom 3:31 RSV

We are always met with,”That’s not what my Pastor, Preacher, Priest etc. says.” Well then tell your Pastor, Preacher, Priest, etc. to produce such a verse. In the mean time, what the Bible actually teaches is quite the opposite.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15

Once in this argument we had a woman who said that He only meant the two. That in the new Covenant there are only two commandments.

36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”  37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.  38 This is the great and first commandment.  39 And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  40 On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.” Matt 22:36-40

However when we pointed out that He was quoting Moses the woman was angry. Because she knew he would have meant the whole passages in question and not just the one verse.

And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. Deut 30:6

You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. Lev. 19:18

Further to note, our Messiah defined the “commandments” by quoting from the Ten.

You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” Luke 18:20

Any who teach that the Law has passed away are bearing false witness as to what God actually said.

Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matt. 5:19

Exodus 20

1   And God spoke all these words, saying,  2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3   “You shall have no other gods before me.

4   “You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;  5 you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,  6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

7   “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

8   “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.  9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work;  10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your manservant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates;  11 for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.

12   “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

13   “You shall not kill.

14   “You shall not commit adultery.

15   “You shall not steal.

16   “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17   “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbors.”
