35 Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. 36 His line shall endure for ever, his throne as long as the sun before me. Ps 89:35-36
Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. Is 9:7
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. Is. 11:1
There are genealogies in both Matthew and Luke just to established this point.
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Matt. 1:1
. . . the son of Mele-a, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, Luke 3:31
FYI: The Genealogies of Matthew and Luke differ, because Matthew traces Joseph’s line through all the kings of Judah, where Luke traces Mary’s line. We know this from a line in the Talmud that curses Mary the daughter of Heli. The fact that Joseph is called the son of Heli would indicate that Mary was an only child or the eldest of all daughters, making her husband, Heli’s heir.
In the history of Messiah’s ministry is the curious occurrence of the healing on the way to Jericho of blind Bartimaeus and his friend. These blind men seemed to be some of the few who could see that He was the Son of David. [Matt 9:27-31; Luke 18:35-43]
And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” Matt. 9:27
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Mark 10:47
And he cried, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Luke 18:38
A Canaanite woman which was a despised kind of Gentile, knew who He was.
And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon.” Matt. 15:22
The crowds knew Him as the Son of David.
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” Matt. 21:9
But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant; Matt. 21:15
However the religious leader could not accept this fact. The hard thing to understand was that they were sitting at the temple where the genealogical records were kept, yet they never seems to have looked it up. Or if they did they kept their mouths shut as to this One man’s lineage.
So Messiah begins to teach them in the way of the Jews, which is to start with a question.
And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? Mark 12:35
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet? 45 If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions. Matt. 22:41-46
The LORD says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool.” Psa. 110:1
The Rabbis then as now taught that Messiah was but a man. However this Psalm makes it quit clear that Messiah supersedes David His father in authority. He asked them how could this be possible? They had no answer they were either blind or refused to see that Messiah must be deity. They have the same problem with Zech.13:7-9.
His genealogies are there, for all the world to see that He is the Son of David. It is interesting to note that if a messiah were to show up now as the Rabbis say, how is he going to prove he is a son of David. All the genealogical records were lost when the temple burned in 70AD.
There is however a warning in that the post-modern church has set it self up to make the same mistake. Like the Rabbis they have imagined the prophecies mean all kinds of fantastical things. They have set up an entire fictitious scenario as to the order of events. They have a rapture, seven year tribulation, and a political antichrist, none of which are in the actually text of the Bible.
When none of these fantasies occur will they recognize their Messiah when he comes? Or like the Rabbis will they miss the hour of their visitation?
. . . and dash you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you; because you did not know the time of your visitation.” Luke 19:44
