second-coming2 YAHWEH GA’AL

For an explanation of Jehovah/YHWH see also: God? What’s in a Name.

Ga’al can mean either redeem or avenge.

“The LORD, Your Redeemer”

Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “For your sake I will send to Babylon and break down all the bars, and the shouting of the Chaldeans will be turned to lamentations. Is. 43:14

In order to be redeemed one must be a relative or property.

The Law of Redeeming a Relative

“If your brother becomes poor, and sells part of his property, then his next of kin shall come and redeem what his brother has sold. 26 If a man has no one to redeem it, and then himself becomes prosperous and finds sufficient means to redeem it, 27 let him reckon the years since he sold it and pay back the overpayment to the man to whom he sold it; and he shall return to his property. Lev. 25:25-27

Redeeming Property

And if one of the Levites does not exercise his right of redemption, then the house that was sold in a city of their possession shall be released in the jubilee; for the houses in the cities of the Levites are their possession among the people of Israel. Lev. 25:33

“When a man dedicates his house to be holy to the LORD, the priest shall value it as either good or bad; as the priest values it, so it shall stand. 15 And if he who dedicates it wishes to redeem his house, he shall add a fifth of the valuation in money to it, and it shall be his. Lev. 27:14-15

In the book of Ruth, the Lord being our redeemer is explained in the typology of the kinsmen redeemer. This is the near relative who saves one from their poverty or shame. The most recognized person in the Bible who acts as a ga’al is Boaz. Who redeemed the Moabite Ruth when he could have walked away. At a time when everyone was doing what was right in their own eyes, Boaz stands out as a man who knew the law and his responsibilities under it. He did not say, “she’s a Moabite, I don’t have to redeem, she’s not a real relative.”

Remain this night, and in the morning, if he will do the part of the next of kin for you, well; let him do it; but if he is not willing to do the part of the next of kin for you, then, as the LORD lives, I will do the part of the next of kin for you. Lie down until the morning.” Ruth 3:13

Like Boaz, God does not say, that we are or are not of Abraham, He adopts all who are willing.

So you see that it is men of faith who are the sons of Abraham. Gal. 3:7

Where Ruth was redeemed from a life of poverty, the Lord redeems us from the  more permeant spiritual poverty of death.

. . . who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, Ps 103:4

Once we are redeemed we have a responsibility to God to do good deeds because of our redemption, for we have been purified. It is a process in our lives.

. . . who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. Titus 2:14
