And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. Luke 1:35
This is the only verse that theologians give for the omnipotence of the Holy Spirit. They purposely limit themselves to just the New Testament. Because it is only in the New Testament that the term Holy Spirit occurs. The Old Testament term is the Spirit of God.
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. Gen. 1:2
This indicates that the Holy Spirit was present at creation, and took on the role of protector. The Hebrew word translated as hover is rechaf it is used only two other times.
Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions, Deut. 32:11
The word for eagle is actually a vulture in the Hebrew, but I suppose either way the mother is very protective of her young. On the day they leave the nest the parents fly under the young in case they weaken and need a little help to stay in the air. So our God provides us with assurance that He will be there for us in the hour of our need, providing us with the words to give in our defense.
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26
This same action of the Holy Spirit can cause one to shake on the inside. As Jeremiah considers the spiritual adultly of his people.
Concerning the prophets: My heart is broken within me, all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, because of the LORD and because of his holy words. Jer. 23:9
Although Jeremiah’s heart was broken, the people who actually saw Messiah were not shaken. He was just not as impressive as they had imagined. His kingdom was not physical, it was wholly spiritual. Instead they accused Him of using the powers of Satan. They did not know their King and therefore could not perceive His kingdom.
But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. Matt. 12:28
