Many teach or have been taught that the reason Messiah was expected to be born of a virgin, was Is 7:14. But this is not the case, the word in Isaiah is not “virgin,” rather it is “almeh”. The reason for the knowledge of a virgin birth is in Gen 3.
The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” Gen. 3:14-16
Women don’t have seed, men do. In fact the ancients didn’t quite get how humans and for that matter all mammals procreated. They had no way of seeing the ovum till microscopes. It was the mystery of the womb. Many ancient cult rituals involved coming out of caves or tunnels, as a way of expressing their wonder at this great mystery of birth.
The knowledge of Gen 3 is almost universal. The fact is that every cultural myth in the world claims that its hero god was born in some miraculous manner, with no direct contact between the father and mother e.g. Tammuz, Heracles/Hercules, Horus, etc. Everyone knew that the Redeemer was to come from the seed of a woman. This gave rise to the mother goddess/futility cults the world over. Everyone was looking for the Redeemer. Anyone wanting power, simply claimed that they were or knew this redeemer. The myths grew with each generation, so when the real Redeemer showed up, the world yawned and said, Oh look! another one.
This is how the deceiver works. He mimics, twist, copies or impersonates the truth. So where truth is supposed to set us free, we instead become insnared in a lie. Then we go out and insnare others, because we think we have the truth.
FYI: One of the many reasons given for the tradition that a woman must light the Shabbot candles is that by a woman light was taken from the world, and by a woman that light was returned.
