Sabbath/Rest

Sunday is a fine day to worship God, but the Sabbath is a day of rest and it is on the seventh day.

I once promised myself that I would never bother to write a post on the Sabbath, because so many others have written reams about it. Yet here I am.

For years we have gotten a daily devotional from The Institute for Creation Research. Most of the time they are innocuous bits of Theology. Then there are the ones that reek of dispensational nonsense.

The word “Sabbath” means “rest,” of course—not “Saturday” or “Sunday” or even “seventh” (the word for “seventh” in Hebrew is similar but distinctly different from that for “sabbath”). Most Christians now believe it is appropriate to honor the Lord Jesus (who is both their Creator and Redeemer) to take their seventh day of rest and worship on the first day of each week, thereby recognizing both His finished work of redemption and also His finished work of creation. HMM

FYI: Seventh in Hebrew is shevi’i  it is an feminine adjective, meaning an ordinal number, seventh
Rest  in Hebrew is shevet noun feminine
Sabbath in Hebrew is shevet. singular common noun

HMM seeks to make ambiguous something that is quite straightforward. He had subtly confused the argument by trying to equate seventh and rest. However it is sabbath and rest are spelled exactly the same way. In Hebrew the only difference between the words are the vowel pointings. In other words Gen 2:2-3 is a PUN. (The Hebrew Bible is full of all kinds of puns and other paronomasia.)

FYI: The vowel points a.k.a. nitadote, were added in the Middle Ages because Jews were forgetting how the Hebrew words were pronounced.

The Verse

And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all his work which he had done in creation. Gen. 2:2-3

A clearer example of this pun is here;

. . . he said to them, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy sabbath to the LORD; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay by to be kept till the morning.’” Ex. 16:23

The reason dispensationalist preform these mental gymnastics is they simply do not want to be responsible to keep Sabbath.

You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men.” Mark 7:8

Those that teach that the Law has passed away are Lawless

Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of perdition, 2Th. 2:3

God gave man the gift of the sabbath, a day of rest. If you don’t want His gift of rest, may you live and be well. I’m taking my gift.

And he said to them, “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath; Mark 2:27

So then, there remains a sabbath rest for the people of God; Heb. 4:9
